Waugh Recognizes Sterner Family of Hanover
for Unique Girl Scouting Achievement
HARRISBURG – Senator Mike Waugh (R-York) honored the four daughters of Brad
and Joan Sterner from Hanover today on the unique accomplishment of each having
earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award possible as a Girl Scout.
“Only 5.4% of Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award,” said Waugh. “And here we
have four sisters who have each been successful in attaining this achievement.”
Combined, the girls dedicated 43 years to the Girl Scouts, and each of them –
Aislinn, 26, Erica, 24, Kristin 22, and Laura 20 – followed similar paths
throughout their scouting careers. All four of them trained to be Program Aides
at the local Girl Scout camp during the summers, they each achieved the Girl
Scout Silver Award, the highest award for a Cadette Girl Scout, and they each
went on to attain the Girl Scout Gold Award before graduating from South Western
High School.
The Sterner girls come from a strong scouting background, as well. Their
mother, Joan, was a Girl Scout for 12 years and went on to serve as a Junior
Scout Leader for 10 years. Joan’s two brothers were also successful in
achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and her parents served as leaders within the
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Joan’s parents and one brother accompanied the
family to Harrisburg for today’s recognition.
“It is an honor and a privilege to recognize one family’s accomplishments,
their dedication to personal development and their service to community,” said
Waugh. “They are true role models for all Pennsylvania residents.”
Waugh presented a citation to the family prior to the start of session and
during Session welcomed them as guests in the gallery and recognized them for
their accomplishments.
